Here is a list of benders and what they can do.
Water
Water bending is the ability to control and manipulate water. Depending on where you are brought up, and who has taught you, you can control rain, blood, sweat, water in the plants, ice, etc.. Water is the element of change, and the moon is the source of power for water. The fighting style of water bending is graceful and flowing. However if your character is taught and/or raised in the Foggy Swamp Tribe, it is more ridged and straight. Water bending deals with energy, and they make their own defences become their offence. They turn their opponents power against them. According to Zuko's uncle Iroh, water is the substance of change.

The opposite of water bending is fire bending. Horses from the Foggy Swamp tribe may not learn other water bending techniques because they are to ridged and straight, and same with the other tribes. It just depends who teaches you.
There are a few water benders who can learn healing. Healing can be taught to females in the Healing Huts. Healing can heal a sick horse or a wound.
In order for a water bender to bend water, they must be near a water source. If they are in a desert then they cannot bend the water because there is none present. Unless they can find some. Only the masters can extract water from plants (which kill the plants) and the water vapour in the air, or even the water in blood (can only be done on a full moon). Earth
Earth bending is the ability to manipulate rocks and earth, and other various forms. Earth is the element of substance, horses of the Earth kingdoms are diverse, strong, persistent, and enduring. And maybe even a little bit stubborn. The key to earth bending is listening to the neutral jing. Jing involves listening for the right move to strike at your opponent. Earth benders usually endure hits from their attackers until the right moment comes along to strike a blow that is very powerful. There is a distinct balance between defensive and offensive attacks from an earth bender.

The opposite of Earth bending is air bending. Some horses can even bend sand and metal. For the sand it depends on who teaches you. If you go to the Si Wong Desert you may find a teacher who can teach you how to sand bend. Metal bending is different and very difficult even for a well seasoned master. One probably has to figure out how to metal bend, but it isn't needed much in the horse avatar world.
Removing an earth bender from ground renders them rather useless unless there is rock or earth aboard. If an earth bender lacks determination, they aren't going to have a very good chance at earth bending. It just won't respond to their will.

Fire bending is the pyrokinetic ability to create, control, and manipulate fire. Fire is the element of power which consists of an overpowering force tempered with the want and will to accomplish tasks and desires. It has once happened that fire bending comes from rage, hate, and anger. When really it should represent life and energy. Many of the masters this day have it come from rage, hate, and anger. To get the real fire bending mastery from the first masters you will have to go to the Sun Warrior Tribe But only your current master must recommend you to go there. Zuko is one of the few who has learned it the old and proper way.
Fire benders get their energy from the sun and other solar objects. It is also said that they can draw their power from lightning and volcanic energy. Fire bending is the most aggressive of the four elements. Fire benders are more offensive than defensive. They have swift attacks.

You need to have a good defence because fire bending is very in your face, and quickly in your face. If there is a solar eclipse, then fire bending won't work. Air
Air bending is the ability to aerokineticly control and manipulate air. The air nomads are very peaceful horses. Air is the element of freedom. The air nomads have detached themselves from the rest of the world finding peace and freedom. Every child born from air bending parent(s) will be an air bender because they are always striving for spiritual enlightenment. The key to air bend is to find the chi spot with the least amount of resistance. Air bending is entirely defensive, however it is the most dynamic of all four elements. Air benders have powerful attacks that can be fatal to those who cross it. But because of their beliefs they don't like to do that.
Air benders never seek a fight. Earth bending is the opposite of Air bending. As they are direct as air benders try to avoid. There is very few weaknesses to air bending. The only few are their lack of wanting to hurt or kill another, and if they are in a small confined space they cannot control or manipulate air. The different air temples are gender specific. Females are in the Eastern Air Temple and Western Air Temple. And males are located in the Northern Air Temple and the Southern Air Temple

Becoming a Master
To become a master you must train with a master of the alliance in which you belong to. It is easy to find a master, most leads/royalty are masters in the alliance in which they lead.
To become a master you must be at least 8-10 years old and have a few threads with the master teaching you in the art of your specified bending. The Avatar isn't a very good teacher as he/she is always out helping the world with disputes or disasters. But if Aang, or another avatar, is the only master present then you may ask them. However, don't be put out if they say no.
For an Air bender to get their tattoos they must be a master. Tattoos start from their forehead, down their mane to a few strands in their tail, then branching off the back to each of the fore legs in arrow shapes. Here is an example of air bending tattoos: Click
The Avatar

The avatar can go into the 'avatar state' which is a defence mechanism for the avatar. It makes the avatar more powerful and gives him/her the powers of the previous avatars.
The avatar can learn many things. Such as energy bending which means he/she can take away or give a horse a bending ability. Though it is a very dangerous practice as the avatar can die from doing so if their spirit is weak. So this is used only in desperate cases.
The avatar is chosen in a line: Water, Earth, Fire, and Air. It is a circle. If the avatar dies, then it goes to the next element in the cycle. However, if the avatar dies while in the avatar state, there is no more avatar.
Next Avatar will be from a Water Tribe and will be female.
